Sounds Like A You Problem

Everyone owes you something.

Happy new year! It’s nearly February, it’s fine.

TODAY we’ve put a new song out.

It’s called Sounds Like A You Problem.

An orange image of a broken statue of Titus Andronicus. The image looks like it's been printed out, crumpled up and scribbled on. 'Sounds Like A You Problem' is in orange font to the right whilst 'Fightmilk' is in black font underneath it.

Artwork by Healey

He’s not a violent man

He’s lifting weights

To see his father

I blend his protein shakes

We keep rewinding

To the same old scene

It sounds like a you problem

Sleeping on eggshells

I know too much

Behind your locked door

Man on the run

And I’m sorry you’re sad

I guess it’s too bad

But that’s how you get what you want

It sounds like a you problem

And everyone owes you something

A few years ago I’d ended up in a relationship where everything I said or did was under intense scrutiny, all the time. I couldn’t seem to do anything without exacerbating this person’s bad mood. The worst part was that I was being repeatedly told that I was responsible for everything wrong in this person’s life, whilst also being told I was the only one who could fix it.

It feels a bit crass to talk about my own history so much but I’m a confessional writer and at times an oversharer. And this is a dynamic I see everywhere, all the time. The unarmed woman being shot at point blank range in her own car by a man who said later that he ‘felt threatened’ by her. The woman who returns to an abusive relationship because she’s made to believe she can change someone else’s behaviour. The men who belittle, hurt, and kill women, because of a perceived loneliness epidemic, or a mental health crisis, or something else that has ended up our responsibility to solve.

This person used to tell me ‘at least I’m not violent’, and I was grateful.

The song is out now thanks to the wonderful support of Fika Recordings and INH Records. It was recorded by Rich Mandell and mastered by Bob Cooper. Enjoy ❤️
